  4.     GARY KASPAROV overcame the computer chess champ Deep Thought,
  5. wiping out his switched-on opponent in a Manhattan match, but the
  6. triumph by the world's top player could be short-lived. Deep
  7. Thought has already beaten several grand masters, and a more
  8. powerful version could be ready in three years. "Chess is wider
  9. than just calculations. You have to use fantasy, intuition and some
  10. kind of prediction," said Kasparov. And he's prepared to take on
  11. a new, improved computer adversary: "I would have to challenge it
  12. in order to protect the human race." That's one move for mankind.
